BROOKLYN BUREAU OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AND BROOKLYN INDIE MARKET PRESENT HOLIDAY SHOPPING EVENT TO BENEFIT AT-RISK FAMILIES LIVING IN BROOKLYN

More than 500 Highly At-Risk Families and Children Will Receive Financial Assistance to Help Make the Holidays Happier

Brooklyn Indie Market

The Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service, and the Brooklyn Indie Market, a collective of Brooklyn fashion and product designers, will host a holiday shopping event to benefit at-risk families and children living in Brooklyn. The shopping benefit will be held on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16 at the Brooklyn Indie Market's new home located at the intersection of Smith and Union Streets in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn.

"About five years ago, my small child and I suddenly found ourselves without a home, just five days before Christmas. It was awful. Lucky for me, I had a network of friends and family who lent their support. There are others, however, who may not be so lucky, so I felt compelled to do what I could to help families in need during the holiday season," says Brooklyn Indie Market founder, Kathy Malone. "Since I had the designer market, I knew that I could organize a shopping benefit that would help disadvantaged families. I contacted the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service because they are a vital resource to at risk-families. My partner, Johanna Resnikoff, and designers loved the idea, and now we have a waiting list of designers who want to help."

The Brooklyn Indie Market will donate 20% of the designers' table rental fees and 10-15% of all sales from the weekend to directly benefit more than 500 at-risk families that remain intact and functioning through the family counseling services provided by the Brooklyn Bureau's Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Center located at 20 New York Avenue and East New York Family Center located at 100 Pennsylvania Avenue. The donation will help pay utility bills, offset apartment rental fees and other vital household expenses. Local merchants will support as well, by providing gifts to raffle off as an incentive for people to shop.

"We applaud the Brooklyn Indie Market for helping to make this holiday season happier for families in need," says Alan Goodman, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service. "Giving is what this season is all about, and these designers are showing the Brooklyn community that everyone can help in a special way."

The Brooklyn Indie Market is a shopping market that features 20 designers and offers the public a first glimpse at the latest designs from emerging fashion, jewelry and product designers; and provides independent designers a hub to showcase and sell their wares.
