The Brooklyn Bureau received Long Island University's Employer of the Year Award for outstanding service learning placement in the '03 - '04 academic year. During that time 24 of their students were placed in seven BBCS programs in the Adult Rehabilitation Services and Family and Children's Services departments. These undergraduate and graduate students majored in Biochemistry, Counseling, Education, Finance, Human Development, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Respiratory Therapy, Social Work, and Speech Pathology.
Together, they dedicated more than 1,840 hours to enhance services to consumers by providing services that ranged from helping children complete homework, to assisting with the evaluation and goal setting of adult consumers. In exchange, of course, they received quality career-related experience and, most importantly, expert guidance from the eight staff members who supervised them.
The impact those staff members have on future professionals is best summed up by Amy Kitchen, a service learning student who was placed with David Cargiulo and Charmaine Bennett during the summer.
"I was able to make my own observations regarding clients prior to partaking in conferences about those clients and their histories. I was then afforded the opportunity to compare and contrast my findings with the findings of other psychologists and professionals in the field. As a Psychology student here at LIU, my observation skills and detection of various psychological disabilities have been strengthened immensely thanks to the supportive and knowledgeable staff at the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service. David and Charmaine's eagerness to help students was remarkable and extremely beneficial to my undergraduate studies!"
