Brooklyn Bureau Celebrates its 139th Anniversary

The Brooklyn Bureau celebrated its 139th year of service to New York City on June 28, 2005 at Bridgewaters, adjacent to the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bureau Board Chairman Wallace P. Parker, Jr. and Executive Director Donna A. Santarsiero accept Excellence in Public Service Award, presented by Richard A. Cook, Chairman of the 100 Year Association of New York.
Through the dedicated effort of our Co-Chairs (Art Certosimo, Robert F. Gartland and Wallace P. Parker, Jr.) and our event committee (including members our Board of Directors and our Executive Director, Donna Santarsiero), the 139th Anniversary Celebration raised more than $235,000 to benefit children, youth, families and adults with disabilities. We are deeply grateful to the individual, corporate and foundation donors whose generosity made our evening a success.

We adopted a July 4th theme to celebrate our nation's 229th birthday, as well as the Brooklyn Bureau's 139th anniversary. Nearly 250 persons-longstanding supporters and new friends-attended. To all of them, as well as the many donors who could not join us for the evening, we are deeply grateful.

Humilde Rodriguez and Yolanda Stephen, Senior Site Supervisor at the Brooklyn Bureau's Day Habilitation Program helped to create the beautiful table centerpieces for our Anniversary Event.

Event planning was a total agency effort. To carry out our July 4th theme, volunteer clients from our Day Habilitation program, which serves people with developmental disabilities, created beautiful tabletop decorations. All our guests enjoyed the decorations, and many took them home. More than 20 Brooklyn Bureau staff members generously worked as volunteers on our first ever Silent Auction, which was another feature of the event. To our clients and staff, all of whom were so effective, we convey our most sincere appreciation.

Our anniversary dinner is the Brooklyn Bureau's primary fund raising event, the proceeds from which support programs and services that benefit more than 15,000 persons each year. Income from the this year's event will help sustain the Brooklyn Bureau's vital services, which include child welfare, education, family preservation mental health, housing and support, and vocational training and job placement to persons with disabilities. Some of the dollars raised will help to satisfy the deficit in our 9/11 Relief program, which closed in October 2004. In its three years of operation, the Brooklyn Bureau 9/11 Relief program served 5,000 individuals and their family members, totaling almost 12,500 persons.
