BROOKLYN BUREAU OF COMMUNITY SERVICE CELEBRATES ITS 142ND ANNIVERSARY AND HONORS THE NEW YORK TIMES NEEDIEST CASES FUND ON JUNE 25, 2008
The Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service - one of Brooklyn's first and largest providers of social services to 13,000 disadvantaged children, families and adults with disabilities - will celebrate its 142nd Anniversary and honor The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund at its annual fundraising event on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Stage 6 at Steiner Studios, 15 Washington Avenue in Brooklyn from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The 142nd Anniversary Event will celebrate the Brooklyn Bureau's 96-year partnership with The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund. Jack Rosenthal President of the New York Times Company Foundation will present remarks for the evening. The Honorable Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President, and his wife, Jamie Markowitz, will serve as Honorary Chairs of the event, and Jesse Blumberg, Artistic Director of the Five Boroughs Music Festival, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
"The Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service is one of the most effective and most respected service organizations, not just in Brooklyn, not just in New York City, but in the nation as a whole. The Brooklyn Bureau has improved the lives of countless children and families, adapting over its 142-year history to meet the needs of a growing population amid rapidly changing social and economic conditions," said Borough President Markowitz. "If the heart of Brooklyn is community, then the Brooklyn Bureau is what keeps our heart pumping!"
Alan Goodman, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Bureau said, "I can't think of a better way to celebrate 142 years of providing parents facing serious hardships with support and resources to keep their families healthy and united; giving children educational experiences that prepare them for productive futures; and providing disabled adults with opportunities for economic self-sufficiency through our vocational training and job placement programs than to pay tribute to The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund. The Neediest Cases Fund provides philanthropic leadership and valuable support that makes it possible for the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service and other Neediest Cases agencies to provide critical services to Brooklyn's and New York's most vulnerable individuals."
The Brooklyn Bureau's annual anniversary celebration is its primary fundraising event, and the proceeds from 142nd Anniversary gathering will sustain its many vital community programs and services that benefit thousands each year - including day care and afterschool programs, vocational and educational preparation for emotionally disturbed teens, family counseling and preservation, job training and placement for individuals with disabilities and shelter services for homeless women with mental illness.
